Interphase engineering toward superior structural stability of Co-free Li-rich layered oxides




Cobalt-free lithium-rich layered oxides (LRLOs) are promising cathode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, but their structural instability hinders practical applications. Interphase engineering plays a crucial role in mitigating phase transitions, oxygen evolution, and surface degradation. Strategies like surface coatings, elemental doping, and electrolyte modifications can enhance stability, improve electrochemical performance, and extend battery lifespan. By controlling the electrode-electrolyte interface, unwanted side reactions and voltage decay can be minimized. These advancements not only promote the commercial viability of LRLOs but also contribute to the development of cost-effective and sustainable energy storage solutions, reducing dependence on scarce cobalt resources.
