We present a luminescent ZnGa₂O₄:Cr³⁺ phosphor engineered through Mg substitution to fine-tune the local structure around Cr³⁺ activators. Introducing Mg modulates lattice distortion and crystal field strength, suppressing non-radiative losses while enhancing radiative transitions. The result is a strong, stable red to near-infrared emission with improved intensity and lifetime. This strategy also maintains thermal stability, ensuring reliable performance under practical operating conditions. By coupling site-selective substitution with defect control, our approach unlocks higher quantum efficiency without complex processing. The material shows clear potential for deep-tissue bio-imaging, persistent luminescence tags, optical sensing, security inks, and next-generation display backlighting.
